Spring Fishing for crappies/the lake to choose

The lake

The first thing to consider is the Lake you’re going to fish
at because it’s the most critical factor. You’ll need to
consider the lake bottom contour because it determines
where the fish are. I generally like to look at the contour of
the lake bottom first to find the depths and structure. You
can get a contour map of any lake you want in North
Dakota at http://gf.nd.gov/fishing/lakedata.html.You can
also find maps of lakes of any state you want on this site

just follow the links. This is the easiest way to figure out
where to fish All you have to do is click on whatever lake
you want to fish and you have a map of the lake bottom.
You will want to find a nice flat shelf that drops off from
14’ to 20’ of water. Try fishing the deeper hole first,
another good spot to be is up in the shallows right off shore
here the water will be warm and that’s where crappies like
to spawn. Well on warmer days anyway but on dark colder
blustery days you might want to try deeper water cause
that’s where they want to be when it’s cold. So, warmer

days closer to shore or a channel opening and colder days
deeper around good structure. Try this it’s an old fisherman
trick I picked up from a friend of mine. Put your line in the
water, when you can’t see your lure anymore drop it down
another 3 feet and start fishing there.


Get set up to fish with a fathead or a crappie minnow or
even a wax worm and fish for fifteen minutes you should
also look on your fish graph and see if the fish are
suspended off the bottom.A lot of the time Crappies will be 1/2 way down to the bottom.Sometimes they will be right underneath you in the boat or the ice you just can't tell without a fish finder.
